SHERMAN MINTON
Youthful image of the U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice,
shown from the chest up in this black and white photograph
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To King V. Hostick/with best
wishes Sherman Minton". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7½x9 (one surface).
Sherman Minton (1890-1965) was a Democratic Senator from Indiana
(1935-1941). Defeated for re-election, he was appointed by President
Roosevelt to the US Court of Appeals (1941) and by President Truman (1949) to
the Supreme Court, resigning for health reasons in 1956. Minton was an early
supporter of what became the desegregation decision of Brown vs. Board of
Education (1954). He voted to uphold the strict security laws during the Red
Scare of the early 1950s, leading authors Gugin & St. Clair to subtitle his
biography "New Deal Senator, Cold War Justice." Hostick was an autograph
dealer and Illinois historian. Lightly rippled at upper edge. Fine
condition.
