In full: "Winifred and I rec'd with sorrow the great loss you have suffered in the death of your son. This note bears our sympathy. All of us with children realize what a calamity it is to have one taken from us. Faithfully." Stanley Reed (1884-1980) was U.S. Solicitor General (1935-1938) and presented the government arguments in numerous New Deal cases. Appointed to the Supreme Court by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938, Reed was considered a moderate and often held the balance between the liberal and the conservative members of the Court in split decisions. He retired in 1957. Fine condition.
