Typed Letter Signed: "Stanley Reed", 1p, 5¾x9. Washington, D.C., 1971 December 6. On his personal Supreme Court stationery to Merle Johnson, Richmond, Indiana. In full: "I am inclosing an autograph photo [not present] as you requested. I am happy to comply with your request since you mentioned you were a friend of the late 'Shay' Minton. I knew him quite well and attended his funeral. Very truly yours," STANLEY REED was U.S. Solicitor General (1935-1938) and presented the government arguments in numerous New Deal cases. Appointed to the Supreme Court by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938, Reed was considered a moderate and often held the balance between the liberal and the conservative members of the Court in split decisions. He retired in 1957. SHERMAN MINTON of Indiana served on the Supreme Court from 1949-1956; he died in 1965. Fold creases not near signature. Fine condition.
