Photograph signed: "Stephen Breyer". Color, 11x8½. Background on the
Supreme Court Chamber imprinted on verso. Stephen Gerald Breyer (born in 1938),
appointed as an Associate Justice in 1994 by President Bill Clinton, is
known for his pragmatic approach to Constitutional issues and is
generally associated with the liberal faction of the U.S. Supreme Court. A
former clerk to Associate Justice Arthur Goldberg (1964), Breyer became a
law professor and lecturer at Harvard in 1967, remaining in the position
until his appointment to the Court. He also served as Special Assistant to
the U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust (1965-1967), and Breyer
was an Assistant Special Prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution
Force in 1973. He was a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First
Circuit (1980-1994; Chief Judge,1990-1994) until becoming an
Associate Justice. Breyer's book, Active Liberty: Interpreting Our
Democratic Constitution, a response to Antonin Scalia's 1997 book, A
Matter of Interpretation, was published in 2005. Slightly creased at
corners. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Fine
condition.
