Signatures: "Sam F. Miller/Associate Justice. Sup. Court/U.S.", "Stephen J. Field/Associate Justice of/U.S. Sup. Court/Washington/Jan. 15. 1879", "W. Strong/Associate Justice Supr Court U.S." and, on verso, "J.S. Black/Penna" and "A.G. Porter/First Comptroller Treasy". Pencil notations in unknown hand. 6½x8¼. MILLER, FIELD and STRONG served together during the last three years of the Salmon P. Chase court and the first six years of the Morrison Waite court. Appointed by President Lincoln, Miller served on the Supreme Court from 1862 to 1890 and Field from 1863 to 1897. Appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant, STRONG was Associate Justice from 1870 to 1880. BLACK was President James Buchanan's Attorney General (1857-1860) and Secretary of State (1860-1861). PORTER, Republican Congressman from Indiana (1859-1863), was First Comptroller of the U. S. Treasury from 1878 to 1880, when he became Governor of Indiana (1881-1885). He later served as U. S. Minister to Italy (1889-1892). Lightly toned and creased. Show-through touches Black and Porter's signatures. Lightly shaded at right and bottom blank edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
