Signature: "Stephen J. Field/Associate Justice of/U.S. Supreme Court/Washington Dec. 16. 1876". 6¾x8. Field (1816-1899) was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Lincoln on March 10, 1863. He was a Democratic member of the 1877 Electoral Commission, voting with the minority in favor of the Tilden electors. At the 1880 Democratic National Convention, Field received 65 first ballot votes, fifth out of 19 candidates for the presidential nomination. He retired in 1897 after serving a then-record 34 years on the Supreme Court. Uneven left edge, where page has been torn from a book. Lightly toned and creased. Missing bottom left edge. Neatly torn from notebook at left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
