Calling Card signed: "Stephen J. Field/Justice of U.S./Supreme Court", 3¼x2 card. On verso of his personal calling card engraved: "Stephen J. Field/Justice of the Supreme Court/U.S." Field was appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Lincoln on March 10, 1863. He was a Democratic member of the 1877 Electoral Commission, voting with the minority in favor of the Tilden electors. At the 1880 Democratic National Convention, Field received 65 first ballot votes, fifth out of 19 candidates for the presidential nomination. He retired in 1897 after serving a then-record 34 years on the Supreme Court. Lightly soiled. Mounting stains on verso. Overall, fine condition.
