THURGOOD MARSHALL. Supreme Court Card signed: "Thurgood Marshall", 4¼x3. Imprinted: "United States Supreme Court/Washington, D.C. 20543". Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993) was the first Black Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court (1967-1991). As Associate Justice, he supported First Amendment rights, opposed the death penalty and voted against any form of discrimination. Marshall had become one of the nation's leading civil rights attorneys while serving as Director-Counsel of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Legal Defense and Education Fund. He succeeded in winning cases that allowed Blacks to vote in Democratic primaries, sit in desegregated buses and hold peaceful demonstrations. A strong advocate of individual rights, Marshall was one of the attorneys who argued Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka (1954) before the U.S. Supreme Court; this victory ended segregation in public schools. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 21¼x16¼.
