Tom C. Clark sends a typed letter offering his congratulations on the
recipient's victory.
TLS: "Tom C. Clark" as Attorney General, 1p, 7x9.
Washington, D.C., 1946 September 18. On official letterhead to Beauford
Jester, Railroad Commissioner of Texas, Austin Texas. He has signed a typed
letter and appended a handwritten postscript. The TLS reads, in
full: "I am a little late in congratulating you upon your victory, but as
you probably know, I have been back from Europe only a few days. My warmest good
wishes for success and happiness! Sincerely". The handwritten postscript
reads, in full: "P.S. I understand you are coming this way. I leave on
the 26th but I'd like to see you before if I could. I'm going West until Oct 5."
Special Assistant in the Justice Department (1937-1943) and Assistant
Attorney General (1943-1945) under FDR, Clark (1899-1977) was appointed
Attorney General by Truman in 1945 and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in
1949. When his son Ramsey was appointed Attorney General by LBJ in 1967, Tom
C. Clark resigned as Associate Justice to avoid any possible conflict of
interest. Staple holes in upper left. Date stamp in upper right. Overall, fine
condition.
