Autograph Note on Supreme Court Card signed: "With good wishes/to Captain Ralph E. Ward/Wiley Rutledge/November 12, 1948" as Associate Justice, 4¼x3¼, Signed in ink on a printed US Supreme Court card, affixed to a 8½x11 page with typed caption and a captioned news photo of Rutledge with fellow Justice Harold Burton and DC Bar Association President Hugh Obear. Wiley Blount Rutledge (1894-1949) was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court on January 11, 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to fill the seat vacated by James F. Byrnes. Confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 8, 1943, he took his seat on February 11, serving until his death on September 10, 1949. Blount, who had previously been appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (1939-1943) by FDR had also been Professor of Law (1926-1935), Acting Dean (1930-1931) and Dean (1935) at Washington University School of Law and Professor of Law and Dean at State University of Iowa College of Law (1935-1939). From the private collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009). Ward, a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate.
