Reg. $120.00
WILLIAM H. MOODY. Signature: "W. H. Moody"/6th Mass Dist", 5x2¼. Letter fragment (unknown hand) on verso. Moody (1853-1917), represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress (1895-1902). He served as Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of the Navy (1902-1904) and Attorney General (1904-1906). President Roosevelt appointed Moody Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1906. A form of crippling rheumatism forced his retirement in 1910. Moody's brief term as Associate Justice can be characterized by its adherence to judicial restraint, a spacious view of the national commerce power and a deference to state power when exercised for social ends. Slightly soiled. Writing on verso shows through faintly. Otherwise, fine condition.
