WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, JR
William J. Brennan, Jr. sends a typed letter of regret that he will
not be able to attend the reception and buffet.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm J Brennan Jr" as Associate
Justice, 1p, 5¾x9. Washington, D.C., 1981 April 23. On "Supreme Court
of the United States, Chambers of Justice Wm. J. Brennan, Jr." letterhead to
Joseph D. Mandel, Esq., Los Angeles County Bar Assn., Los Angeles, California.
In full: "I regret I am unable to accept your kind invitation to the
reception and buffet on May 4, 1981. Thank you very much for inviting me.
Sincerely". With original typed mailing envelope. William J. Brennan,
Jr. (1906-1997), appointed Associate Justice by President Eisenhower,
served from 1956-1990 (under Chief Justices Earl Warren, 1956-1969; Warren E.
Burger, 1969-1986; and, William H. Rehnquist, 1986 until his retirement in
1990). Brennan believed that only by making the Constitution a "living document"
could our system of government keep up with the needs of our society in direct
opposition to the "strict constructionist" approach of his conservative
colleagues, such as Justices Rehnquist and Scalia. Lightly creased with folds,
lower horizontal fold underlines signature. Staple holes at upper left blank
corner, receipt stamp at upper right corner. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at
upper margin. Fine condition.
