WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS The associate justice sends an autograph letter letting a friend know about good fishing spots Autograph Letter signed: "Wm. O. Douglas" in black ink, 1p, 4¼x3¼. No place, 4 June 1947. On official Supreme Court letterhead. To "Dear Mr. Gest". In full: "My fishing partner whom you met at West Yellowstone is James T. Donald, Baker, Oregon./ He will be glad to give you the information you want. I recommend Silver Creek, near Haley, Ida. If you fish it near the Point of Rocks about 5 or 5:30 in the afternoon until dark you'll get a thrill. Dry flies, of course." William Orville Douglas (1898-1980) served as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1937 to 1939, during which time President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court to succeed Louis D. Brandeis. Justice Douglas's service on the Court totaled 36 years and seven months, longer than any other justice up until that point. He retired in November 1975 and died five years later at the age of 81. He was strongly libertarian in his opinions, distrustful of establishments of all types, and considered himself a voice for the voiceless and powerless. His book, An Almanac of Liberty, was published in 1954. Soiled and creased. Corners slightly chipped away. Pencil note (unknown hand) erased on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
