WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS
He sends an autograph letter of thanks to a friend asking him when he will be able to come again
Autograph Letter signed: "Bill" in blue ink, 1p, 7¼x10½. On his personal letterhead. Goose Prairie, Washington, 1968 August 30. To "Dear Damon" [Trout]. In full: "Sorry you could not get up in August. Any chance in September? I will be in Portland, seeing a doctor this next week as well [4 words illegible]./ Say, those spareribs you sent up were the best ever. We heated them up & had them with cocktails and they were delicious./ As ever." Accompanied by envelope addressed in signer's hand to "Damon Trout, Esq/ Cornelius/ Oregon", postmarked Gooseprairie, Washington, August 30, 1968. William Orville Douglas (1898-1980) served as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1937 to 1939, during which time President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court to succeed Louis D. Brandeis. Justice Douglas's service on the Court totaled 36 years and seven months, longer than any other justice up until that point. He retired in November 1975 and died five years later at the age of 81. He was strongly libertarian in his opinions, distrustful of establishments of all types, and considered himself a voice for the voiceless and powerless. His book, An Almanac of Liberty, was published in 1954. Fine condition.
