WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS
He agrees to waive royalties on copies of his book North from Malaya (1953) given away in a publisher's promotion
Carbon Document signed: "W O Douglas" in blue ink, 1p, 7½x10¼. New York, New York, 1953 October 21. Douglas signs acceptance of a documentary letter signed by "Ken McCormick", Editor in Chief, Doubleday and Company to Miss Helen Strauss at the William Morris Agency, New York. He thereby gives permission for Doubleday to give a free promotional copy of his book North from Malaya (1953) for every ten copies purchased by a bookseller, and consents to waive his usual royalty fee on these promotional copies. William Orville Douglas (1898-1980) served as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1937 to 1939, during which time President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court to succeed Louis D. Brandeis. Justice Douglas's service on the Court totaled 36 years and seven months, longer than any other justice up until that point. He retired in November 1975 and died five years later at the age of 81. He was strongly libertarian in his opinions, distrustful of establishments of all types, and considered himself a voice for the voiceless and powerless. Stray red ink marks. Irregular edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
