WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS Supreme Court Card signed: "W O Douglas" in black ink, 4x3. Imprinted: "Supreme Court of the United States/ Washington, D.C. 20543". William Orville Douglas (1898-1980), a 1925 graduate of Columbia Law School, taught law at Columbia and Yale before serving as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (1937-1939). In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court to succeed Louis D. Brandeis. Justice Douglas' service on the Court (1939-1975) totaled 36 years and seven months, longer than any other Justice up until that point. An outspoken member of the Court, Douglas promoted individual freedom by supporting First Amendment rights, such as the freedom of the press and the implied right to privacy, and he denounced censorship and obscenity laws. He was strongly libertarian in his opinions, distrustful of establishments of all types, and considered himself a voice for the voiceless and powerless. Douglas, who retired in November 1975, died five years later at the age of 81. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 20¼x15¾.
