WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS
The justice sends a typed letter trying to set up a good time to visit friends
Typed Letter signed: "W O Douglas" in blue ink, 1p, 5¾x9. Washington, D.C., 1962 March
21. On Supreme Court letterhead to Paul Doherty, Gorham, New Hampshire. In full: "It
was nice to hear from you. I hope your Barbara is improving every day. I would like to get up next
Winter for a trip with you in snow time. Let's see if we cannot set that aside. When I get the
Court schedule, I will give you a time in January when I might be able to get away for a week or
ten days. I do not know how you can go about placing an article unless you work through an
Agent. If you want to write Helen Strauss of the William Morris Agency, 1740 Broadway, New
York City, she would be very helpful. She handles my books and articles. If you would like, I
would be happy to send her the article which you wrote so that she would have a better idea as to
what you have in mind when you write her. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.
Yours faithfully." William Orville Douglas (1898-1980) served as chairman of the Securities
and Exchange Commission from 1937 to 1939, during which time President Franklin D.
Roosevelt appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court to succeed Louis D.
Brandeis. Justice Douglas's service on the Court totaled 36 years and seven months, longer
than any other justice up until that point. He retired in November 1975 and died five years
later at the age of 81. He was strongly libertarian in his opinions, distrustful of
establishments of all types, and considered himself a voice for the voiceless and powerless. Paul
Doherty, an official with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, had
accompanied Douglas on hikes through that state's White Mountains. Douglas recounted
their adventure in his book, My Wilderness: East to Katahdin (1961). Fold creases not near
signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
