The Secretary of State signs a letter to Representative William A. Rodenberg, thanking him for a copy of his address on Abraham Lincoln
Typed letter signed: "William R. Day", 1 page, 8x10½. March 27, 1916. Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Sir: I beg to thank you for the copy of your address on "Abraham Lincoln", which I have read with much interest. Very truly yours". In his days as a practicing attorney, William R. Day (1849-1923) served as a legal and political advisor to William McKinley-after his election to the Presidency he appointed Day to Assistant Secretary of State (1897-1898). As Secretary of State (1898), he disagreed with the terms advocated by President McKinley for ending the Spanish- American War but he negotiated them and then led the US Peace Commission and signed the Treaty of Pairs. Upon his return, McKinley appointed him to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals (1899-1903). Theodore Roosevelt appointed Day to The United States Supreme Court (1903-1922). Multiple folds. Heavily toned. Ink haloed and smeared, but legible. Signature heavily faded. Surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
