Sir". In full: "You must have been given my name by mistake. I
retired from business and other activities some years ago, & now I
live out here. I could not contribute anything of interest or help to your
research. I am sorry." John Jacob Astor (1886-1971), the younger brother
of Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879-1952), bought a major share of "The
Times" of London and was made 1st Baron Astor of Hever. In 1890, their
father, William Waldorf Astor (1848-1919), the great-grandson of fur magnate
John Jacob Astor (1763-1848), had moved to England, where he acquired a
newspaper and several magazines, founded "Pall Mall Magazine" and was made 1st
Viscount Astor. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
