As Britain's Ambassador to the US, he welcomes Lady Sarah Wilson to
Washington.
Typed Letter signed: "A. Geddes", 1 page, 7½x9½. British
Embassy, Washington, 1923 February 26. On official letterhead to Lady Sarah
Wilson, The Ambassador Hotel, New York, N. Y. In full: "I remember you
quite well and shall of course be delighted to see you when you are in
Washington. Unfortunately I have been laid up with a very sharp attack of
influenza and am not yet fit for much, and we have infectious illness in the
house which makes it difficult for us to entertain. If, however, you will let my
secretary know where you are staying and how long you will be here, I hope Lady
Geddes and I may see something of you. Yours sincerely". Auckland Geddes
(1879-1954), a trained surgeon, served in the British Army in the 2nd
Boer War and World War I. Elected to Parliament as a Unionist
(1917-1920), he served in the government of Prime Minister Lloyd George as
Minister of Recruiting and President of the Board of Trade. He was
British Ambassador to the US (1920-1924). Geddes, raised to the peerage as
Baron Geddes of Rolvenden in 1942, also taught anatomy at universities in
Scotland, Ireland and Canada. Lady Sarah Wilson née Churchill had gained
fame as a female war correspondent during the 2nd Boer War. She was the aunt of
future Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Multiple folds. Toned. Corners slightly
worn and creased. Light surface creases. Slightly soiled on verso. Otherwise,
fine condition.
