August Belmont, Jr. sends a typed letter agreeing to become a member
of a committee to organize the first Trans-Continental Aerial Derby.
Typed Letter Signed: "August Belmont", 1p, 7¾x10½. Black
bordered imprinted letter head 43 Exchange Place, New York, 1919 October
14. To Mr. R. G. Landis, Secretary, Aerial League of America, New York, New
York. In full: "I have received your letter dated October 3rd, in
which you advise me of my selection as a member of the Committee to organize the
first Trans-Continental Aerial Derby, which is to be held under the auspices of
the Aerial League. I shall be pleased to serve as a member of the Committee, but
I do not know that I can render very much service, nor can I give much time to
it. I remain, Yours very truly," Belmont (1853-1924) took full control of
August Belmont & Company upon his father's death in 1890. Belmont was also a
dominant figure in horseracing. The year after this letter, the Westchester
Racing Association, which Belmont had helped found, began building the Belmont
Park racetrack (1903-1905), named after his father. Folds, light vertical
fold touches "e" in Belmont. Fine condition.
