AUGUSTA ROELAND
The stage and screen performer sends a brief letter to Daniel Blum, Founder of Theatre World.
Autograph letter signed: "Augusta Roeland," in blue ink, 1 page, 7¼x10½. New York City, no date. On personal letterhead. To "Dear Mr. [Daniel]Blum," in full: "Enclosed is the photo you requested for your file. I'm so sorry to be so slow in answering but I was really 'fresh out' of pictures. Thank you--Sincerely." Augusta Roeland starred in Red Gloves (1948-1949) with John Dall and Charles Boyer. It was her first starring role, but not her first appearance on Broadway, which came nearly 15 years earlier in the original production of Victoria Regina (1935). She also appeared in Heart of a City (1942), Open House (1947), and The Heiress (1947-1948). On screen, she performed on The Ford Theatre Hour (1949), Robert Montgomery Presents (1951) and Star Tonight (1955). Daniel Blum founded Theatre World in 1945, serving as its chief editor until his death in 1964. Aided by Norman McDonald and John A. Willis (his successor as chief editor), Blum also conceived what would become the prestigious Theatre World Awards for promising new actors in the New York stage, Broadway and later off-Broadway as well. Normal mailing folds. Top left edge torn. Otherwise, fine condition.
