The stage and screen performer sends a brief letter to Daniel Blum,
Founder of Theatre World.
Autograph letter signed: "Augusta Roeland," in blue ink, 1
page, 7¼x10½. New York City, no date. On personal letterhead. To "Dear
Mr. [Daniel]Blum," in full: "Enclosed is the photo you
requested for your file. I'm so sorry to be so slow in answering but I was
really 'fresh out' of pictures. Thank you--Sincerely." Augusta Roeland
starred in Red Gloves (1948-1949) with John Dall and Charles
Boyer. It was her first starring role, but not her first appearance on
Broadway, which came nearly 15 years earlier in the original production of
Victoria Regina (1935). She also appeared in Heart of a City
(1942), Open House (1947), and The Heiress (1947-1948). On screen,
she performed on The Ford Theatre Hour (1949), Robert Montgomery
Presents (1951) and Star Tonight (1955). Daniel Blum
founded Theatre World in 1945, serving as its chief editor until his
death in 1964. Aided by Norman McDonald and John A. Willis (his successor as
chief editor), Blum also conceived what would become the prestigious Theatre
World Awards for promising new actors in the New York stage, Broadway and
later off-Broadway as well. Normal mailing folds. Top left edge torn. Otherwise,
