AUGUSTE RODIN
Signed Manuscript Letter in French (1906), thanking a German author for sending him a book of poetry in German (which Rodin couldn't read)
Manuscript Letter signed: "Aug. Rodin", 2 pages, 5x6½ folded, 10x6½ opened flat. 12 Rue de l'Universite, (Paris), 1906 October 12. On personal letterhead to Maximilian Brantl, Munich (Germany). In French, loosely translated. "I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your kind sending, and I thank you very much, both for the poems and for your kind attention. I regret not being able to enjoy the book as a translation, but I could at least know your ideas if not their expression. Please believe, sir, my sincere acknowledgement, and accept, I pray, the expression of my genuine sentiments." French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is considered to be one of the greatest portraitists in the history of sculpture. His works include The Thinker and The Kiss and busts of Hugo, Proust, Shaw and Clemenceau. Departing from the formalism of much earlier sculpture, Rodin realistically portrayed the physicality of the human form. By the time he signed this letter, Rodin had achieved international acclaim. The letter's recipient Maximilian Brantl (1881-1959), a lawyer by occupation and a friend of Thomas Mann, wrote as a hobby. Normal mailing folds. Fine condition.
