AUGUSTE VAN BIENE
"The Magician of the Cello" is shown seated with his instrument in a 3½x5½ postcard photo
Postcard Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mrs. Nicholson from/Auguste Van Biene/March 8/1912". Sepia, 3½x5½. Dutch-born cellist Auguste Van Biene (1849-1913) played with the Rotterdam Opera House Orchestra at age 15, but was busking on London street corners when discovered by Sir Michael Costa, who brought him to play at Covent Garden. Van Biene soon acquired the moniker "the Magician of the Cello." By the 1880s, he shifted his focus to theatrical management, producing and acting in his own plays. His greatest success was The Broken Melody (1892), featuring his performance of his own compositions. Van Biene died on stage while playing in one of his works. Corners lightly worn. Signature faded but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
