AUGUSTUS H. GARLAND
Garland handwrote, signed and dated this letter to a Delavan, Illinois autograph hunter from Washington, DC in 1891. He writes that he doesn't have anything with President Grover Cleveland's signature on it.
Autograph letter signed "A H Garland". With pencil notations in upper right corner in upper right corner. 1 page, 8x9½, ruled paper. Washington, DC, June 6, 1891. Addressed to Julius [last name illegible], Esq., Delavan, Illinois. In full: "Dear Sir - I have no letter of Mr. Cleveland that I could spare, but I write him [illegible] to-day to send [illegible] me - have new one. [illegible] & to [illegible] myself. Truly yours". Garland was United States Attorney General under President Grover Cleveland (1885-1889). He lost the post after Cleveland lost his reelection bid to Benjamin Harrison in 1888. Garland (1832-1899, born in Covington, Tennessee), a member of both the Confederate House and Senate during the Civil War, was elected to the U.S. Senate from Arkansas for the term beginning March 4, 1867, but was not permitted to take his seat as Arkansas had not yet been readmitted to representation. After serving as Governor of Arkansas (1874-1876), he was again elected U.S. Senator from 1877 until 1885, when he resigned to become U. S. Attorney General. Lightly toned and creased. Page was neatly torn from pad or notebook on left edge. Folded in half horizontally and twice vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
