AUGUSTUS HILL GARLAND
As a US Senator from Arkansas, he orders 6 copies of the Silver Commission Report on House of Representatives stationery.
Autograph Note signed: "A. H. Garland/U.S.S.from Arkansas", 1 page, 5x5. Washington, D.C., 1877 October 22. In full: "Give the bearer 6 copies of the Silver Commission Report & oblige". Augustus Garland (1832-1899, born in Covington, Tennessee), a member of both the Confederate House and Senate during the Civil War, was elected to the U.S. Senate from Arkansas for the term beginning March 4, 1867, but was not permitted to take his seat as Arkansas had not yet been readmitted to representation. After serving as Governor of Arkansas (1874-1876), he was again elected U.S. Senator from 1877 until 1885, when he was became US Attorney General in President Cleveland's first term (1885-1889). Garland is the only US Cabinet officer ever censured by the US Senate (for failure to turn over documents about the firing of a US Attorney), but he retained President Cleveland's confidence. After leaving office, he wrote several books about law and the constitution, and suffered a fatal stroke while arguing a case before the US Supreme Court. Staple holes at bottom edge. Corners lightly crease. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
