The British author sends letter regarding the sale of some of his
dogs, signs name in blue ink
Autograph letter signed: "Aug. Mayhew" in blue ink. 1 page,
4½x7. Twickenham, London, England. September 27, 1873. In full: "Dear
Sir, The little pug bitch I gave Mrs. Bryan was very small & pretty. She is
by Mrs. Mayhews Mars out of Mrs. Mayhews Sylvia. Hoping your purchase may turn
out a little [illegible]. Yours very truly". Post script: "I know
nothing of the dog Papa". Augustus Mayhew (1826-1875) was an English
journalist and author, best known for his works alongside his brother Henry
Mayhew on books such as The Greatest Plague of Life (1847). Mayhew
also wrote (alongside H.S. Edwards) play productions such as The Goose and
the Golden Eggs (1859), Christmas Boxes (1860), and
The Four Cousins (1871). He served as the editor of The Comic
Almanac from 1848-1850; he furthermore solely wrote Paved with Gold,
or the Romance and Reality of London (1857) and Faces for
Fortunes (1865). Normal mailing folds. Toned. Edges frayed. Toned tape
affixed in margins. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine
condition.
