AUGUSTUS O. STANLEY
Ink signature on a 5x3 card with typed caption
Signature: "A. O. Stanley/Henderson, Ky.", 5x3 card. Typed
caption notes only Stanley's first term in Congress. Democrat Augustus Owsley
Stanley (1867-1958) served Kentucky as a US Representative (1903-1915), Governor
(1915-1919) and US Senator (1919-1925). Closely identified with the
anti-trust movement, he spearheaded investigations of US Steel and American
Tobacco. He lost a bid for re-election in 1924, in large measure because of his
outspoken opposition to Prohibition. He served for nearly a quarter century
(1930-1954) on the Joint International Commission which settled US-Canada
boundary disputes, and was its Chairman from 1933. Evenly toned. Fine
condition.
