AUGUSTUS S. MERRIMON
The North Carolina senator signs this card in black ink
Signature: “A.S. Merrimon/ of/ North Carolina”, in black ink, 3½x2. Augustus Summerfield
Merrimon (1830-1892) was a U.S. senator from the state of North Carolina who served
from 1873 to 1879. Merrimon served in the Confederate Army, but retired in order to
become a prosecutor for North Carolina's eighth judicial district. Merrimon unsuccessfully ran
for governor in 1872, but was elected to the U.S. Senate the same year. During his time in
Congress, he butted heads with Zebulon B. Vance and created turmoil as a part of the
South Carolina Committee, a congressional commission created to look into voter
intimidation and fraud during the 1876 elections. Following an unsuccessful campaign for
re-election, Merrimon served as Associate Justice from 1883 to 1889, and then as Chief
Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1889 until his death in 1892. Toned,
especially at edges. Remnants from a previous mounting on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
