A rare letter from the British soprano, sending along a photograph to a fan, and thanking him for the honor of "being among your collection"
Autograph letter signed: "Ava June", in blue felt tip, 4½x5¼. In full: "Thank you for writing to me, and giving me the honor of being among your collection. I enclose a photograph of myself in costume but as myself, hoping this will be alright for you [items not included]. Thank you once again. Yours sincerely". Ava June (1931-2013) was an operatic soprano hailing from London, known for her extended stays with Sadler's Wells Opera. June left school at age 14 to become a theatrical dressmaker, soon after beginning singing lessons with South African contralto Kate Opperman. She joined Sadler's Wells Opera in 1953 and remained with the company until 1983, but also sang with several different groups, including the Welsh National Opera and the Scottish Opera. After retiring from opera, June worked as a voice coach both independently and with several institutions, with her longest tenure being at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
