and Governor of Missouri, Benjamin Gratz Brown was the unsuccessful Democratic
candidate for Vice President in 1872. When presidential nominee Horace Greeley
died before the electoral college met, Brown and three others received Greeley's
electoral votes for President. Brown received 18 electoral votes for President
and 47 for Vice President. Portion gouged out at blank left edge just nicking
the down stroke of his first initial "B" of signature.
