B. MICHAEL (BOLESLAW MICHAL "MIKE") GLADYCH
The WWII veteran responds to a query on the American attitude toward war
Typed Letter Signed: "B. Michael Gladych Ph.D.", 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1991 March 29. To "Dear Mr. Stanhope" In full: "Thank you for your letter re attitude of the American people to war. I am convinced that the Americans at large have most likely the healthiest opinion of life in general and war in particular. I have observed them in four wars -- both in combat and on the home front and I can tell you I know of no one who would easily advocate war as a solution, and that includes the so-called "just war."/ There seems to be a collective wisdom among the people of the country and I don't believe we could ever develop or adopt a "cavalier attitude" towards waging war, no matter what our politicians might proclaim. So, rest easy, Mr. Stanhope. Sure, we have problems -- lots of them -- big ones but we are working on solutions and war of any kind does not seem to be one of them." Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Ace Michael Gladych (1918-2011) was a Polish fighter pilot who was awarded the Virtuti Militari, Cross of Valour with three bars by the Polish Air Force, the DFC by the Royal Air Force, and the Silver Star and two clusters, the Air Medal and three clusters by the United States Air Force. After graduating from the Polish Air Force Academy and going on several missions, he joined the Royal Air Force where he claimed to have had the first of several encounters with the German Ace Georg-Peter Eder. After serving two tours with the Royal Air Force, Gladych joined an unofficial secondment to the 56th Fighter Group. As a result, he was expelled from the Polish Air Force. He recorded ten "kills" while serving with the 56th Fighter Group during WWII. After the war, Gladych was allegedly involved in black market smuggling all over Europe. Because of his insight into various underworld operations, he is thought to have been recruited by the CIA to join Project ARTICHOKE, a mind control program that researched the efficacy of different interrogation methods. In his later years he became a U.S. citizen. He successfully earned his Ph. D. and practiced psychotherapy in the Seattle, Washington area for many years. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
