BAINBRIDGE COLBY
As the outgoing Secretary of State, he forwards an introductory letter to US diplomats, to business and philanthropic leader Edward Filene.
Typed Letter signed: "Bainbridge Colby" as Secretary of State, 1 page, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1920 April 27. On official letterhead to Edward A. Filene, Boston, Massachusetts. In full: "It affords me pleasure to give you the enclosed letter of introduction to our Diplomatic and Consular Agents in the countries named in your passport. May I add my cordial good wishes for a pleasant journey? Yours faithfully". [Introductory letter itself is not included.] Bainbridge Colby (1860-1950), a New York lawyer and state legislator, was a founder of the Progressive Party, and its unsuccessful candidate for the US Senate (1916). He was President Wilson's last Secretary of State, firmly supporting the President's foreign policy (as his predecessor, Robert Lansing, had not.) Edward A. Filene (1860-1937) was the founder of Filene's Department Store, known for his philanthropy and especially for his generous treatment of his own employees. A new President, Republican Warren Harding, had already been inaugurated when Colby signed this letter, but apparently he was still serving until confirmation of his successor. Multiple mailing folds. Corners lightly worn. Pencil note (unknown hand) at stamp. Otherwise, fine condition.
