BARBARA MICHAELS (BARBARA G. MERTZ)
The mystery writer signs this typescript from her book The Crying Child
Typescript signed: "Barbara Michaels" in blue ink, 1p, 8½x11. Typescript from the author's book The Crying Child. In part: "'I'm sorry. About the patient.'/ He gave me a quick sidelong glance [sic] and then his somber face lightened in one of those smiles./ 'You really are sorry, aren't you?'/ 'I'm sorry for the whole said [sic], sad world,' I said.'" Barbara Michaels was one of the two pen names of Barbara G. Mertz (1927-2013) (the other being Elizabeth Peters), who was born and raised in Illinois. A New York Times bestselling author, she earned a Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago in 1952. After marrying and having two children, Michaels increasingly devoted her attention to writing, eventually focusing on mystery novels and going on to publish scores of successful books under her two pseudonyms. In 1986, Peters served as Grandmaster at the inaugural Anthony Awards. Then, in 1998, she was named Grandmaster by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards. Peters received the Lifetime Achievement Award at Malice Domestic in 2003. Lightly toned. Two horizontal mailing folds. Corners and edges gently worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
