BARBARA BARONDESS
Rare! Shown in a flashy evening gown, signing with her married name, Barbara Barondess MacLean
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Peter/Best Wishes/Barbara Barondess/MacLean". B/w, 8x9½. Barbara Barondess (1907-2000) was born in Brooklyn, but her family moved to Russia in 1908. During the Russian Revolution, they made a harrowing escape, and were then detained in Poland as Russian spies. They finally reached America, and Barondess in later years expressed a wish to have her ashes scattered at the Statue of Liberty. She was named Miss Greater New York in 1926, and opportunities to sing, dance and eventually act on Broadway followed. Her first prominent role was in Topaz (1929). She was cast in many films - many un-credited between 1925 and 1940, later complaining that the Hollywood studios of that era treated women like "disposable Kleenex." She left acting, returned to college, and became a very successful interior designer. She designed the homes of Greta Garbo, Gary Cooper, Marilyn Monroe, and Ronald Reagan with Jane Wyman, and her décor was featured on the cover of House Beautiful. She also designed fashionable clothing and jewelry. Toned. Signature and inscription lightly beaded and smeared (legible). Light water damage at right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
