BARBARA FRANKLIN. TLS: "Barbara H. Franklin" as Commissioner, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1979 February 16. On letterhead of "U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission" to Ms. Toni Currin, Dillon, South Carolina. In full: "Now that my departure from CPSC is here, did want you to know, much too belatedly, how much I appreciated your nice note and kind words at the time I announced I was leaving. I find I have mixed emotions today - satisfaction about what has been accomplished to make consumer products safer, but concern that there's still much left to do. With thanks and best wishes to you." Barbara Hackman Franklin served as one of the original Commissioners of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission from 1973-1979. Previously a staff assistant to President Richard Nixon, Franklin later became the second woman Secretary of Commerce, serving as the highest-ranking woman in the administration of George Bush from February 27, 1992-January 20, 1993. Considered an expert on corporate management, auditing and financial reporting practices, she is the President and CEO of Barbara Franklin Enterprises, a Washington, D.C.-based international consulting and investment firm and has served on a number of Boards of Directors, including Dow Chemical Company (1980-1992, 1993-present). One of the first women graduates of the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, Franklin is a frequent speaker and commentator and has written a number of books. Slightly creased. Horizontal fold underlines signature. 2 pinhead-size rust stains at upper blank margin. Fine condition.
