Ink note in lower margin (unknown hand): "The oak tree planted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1550, the leaves and acorns of which are believed to be lucky to whoever wears them." By 1999, Cartland, the step-grandmother of Princess Diana, had sold over 650 million copies of her romance novels, which usually featured a virginal heroine who was swept off her feet by a rakish hero who saves the day. The prolific author was still composing 20 or more titles yearly and granting interviews until shortly before her death on May 21, 2000, just seven weeks before her 99th birthday. Fine condition.
