BARBARA JEFFORD
Head and shoulders image (7¼x9¼) of the Shakespearean actress, signed before her 20th birthday and one year after her stage debut. A rare signature.
Magazine Photograph signed: "With best wishes -/Barbara Jefford/April 1950". Sepia, 7¼x9¼. English actress Barbara Jefford (b. 1930) began performing in radio plays in 1946, while a student at the RADA, and made her stage debut in 1949. Establishing herself from the first as a Shakespearean actress, she performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Old Vic, and the National Theatre, and opposite such renowned thespians as Anthony Quayle, Michael Redgrave, Derek Jacobi and Kenneth Branagh. She also played the title role in Shaw's Saint Joan, and - in her first film role, received a BAFTA nomination as Molly Bloom in Ulysses (1967). Jeffords was awarded an OBE at age 30 for "service to the theatre", the youngest ever recipient of this honor. A recent role was that of Mrs. Higgins in Shaw's Pygmalion. She has been the voice of several female characters in James Bond movies. Other notable film work includes The Bofors Gun, Shoes of the Fisherman, Hitler: the Last Ten Days (as Magda Goebbels), Fellini's And the Ship Sails On, and Polanski's The Ninth Gate. She is no stranger to television either, appearing often since her debut as Hamlet's Ophelia in 1959. Corners and edges worn. Light surface creases. Defects from original print. Slight surface scratches. Otherwise, fine condition.
