His signature as editor of Readers Digest, in pencil on an album leaf bearing his newspaper photo
Signature: "Barclay Acheson/Readers Digest" in pencil, 4½x album leaf. Newspaper photo affixed to left of signature. Typed caption: Barclay Acheson/Associate editor Readers Digest 1936. In 1922, DeWitt Wallace used a $5,000 loan from his brother in law, Barclay Acheson (1887-1957), to found the Readers Digest. The Digest offered abridged versions of popular fiction and nonfiction articles, and carried no advertising. Despite the lack of ads, it was a commercial success, in part because in its early years it honored no copyrights and paid no royalties. Acheson became associate editor of the Readers Digest and in 1942 became executive director of its international editions. By the time of his death, the Readers Digest was published in 13 languages and reached 9 million foreign readers. Acheson became a well known philanthropist, also in demand as a speaker. Edges toned. Left edge ragged form previous binding. Stained on the "D" in Digest. Otherwise fine condition.
