Check signed "Barnaby Conrad" 6x3. Carpenteria, California, March 3, 2002. Check #5057, drawn on Conrad's personal account at the Bank of America, payable to Catherine Ryan Hyde for $100.00. Memo: "Snoopy Book". Conrad (with Monte Schulz, Charles Schulz's son) edited Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life (2003), with chapters of advice for writers penned by many successful authors, including Catherine Ryan Hyde. This check was no doubt associated with that project. Author, artist, and sportsman Barnaby Conrad (1922-2013)published over 30 books during his illustrious career, illustrating and designing the covers for many of them. He first studied art, attending the University of Mexico. While there, he developed an interest in bullfighting, eventually becoming a renowned matador in the ring who fought in Spain, Mexico, and Peru. He is the only American to bullfight in all three of these countries to date. His works include My Life as a Matador (1956), Gates of Fear (1957), The Cigar: An Illustrated History of Fine Smoking (1996), and Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life (2002). Conrad founded the Santa Barbara Writers Conference in 1973, running it for over 30 years. Catherine Ryan Hyde (b. 1955) is best known for her novel Pay It Forward (1999), made into a film the following year. Nearly a dozen of her short stories have been honored with inclusion in the annual Best American Short Stories, or have been nominated for the O'Henry Award. Staple holes at top left corner.
