The works of BARNABY CONRAD, who published his autobiography, Fun While It Lasted, in1969, include My Life as a Matador (1956), Gates of Fear (1957), The Cigar: An Illustrated History of Fine Smoking (1996), and The Blonde (1999). Conrad founded the Santa Barbara Writers Conference in 1973, running it for over 30 years. Conrad (with Monte Schulz, the cartoonist's son) edited Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life (2003), with chapters of advice for writers penned by many successful authors, including Elizabeth George. American writer ELIZABETH GEORGE (b. 1949) began writing her Inspector Lynley mysteries, set in Britain, with A Great Deliverance (1988). As of 2010 there were 16 books in the series, which the BBC has brought to television. George has also written three collections of short stories and her own writing guide, Write Away (2004).
