BARNABY CONRAD and A. SCOTT BERG Endorsed $100 check written to the contributor of Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life Check Signed and Endorsed: "Barnaby Conrad" and endorsed "A. Scott Berg/For deposit only", 6x3. Carpenteria, California, May 14, 2002. Check #5149, drawn on Conrad's personal account at the Bank of America, payable to A. Scott Berg for $100.00. Memo: "Snoopy Book". Accompanied by a 1-page typed, draft manuscript submitted by Berg for Conrad's book, bearing a printed Peanuts cartoon at top and bearing ink corrections. Unsigned. Conrad (with Monte Schulz, Charles Schulz's son) edited Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life (2003), with chapters of advice for writers penned by many successful authors, including A. Scott Berg. This check was no doubt associated with that project. Author, artist, and sportsman Barnaby Conrad (1922-2013) published over 30 books during his illustrious career, illustrating and designing the covers for many of them. He first studied art, attending the University of Mexico. While there, he developed an interest in bullfighting, eventually becoming a renowned matador in the ring who fought in Spain, Mexico, and Peru. He is the only American to bullfight in all three of these countries to date. His works include My Life as a Matador (1956), Gates of Fear (1957), The Cigar: An Illustrated History of Fine Smoking (1996), and Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life (2002). Conrad founded the Santa Barbara Writers Conference in 1973, running it for over 30 years. A. Scott Berg (b. 1949) won a National Book Award for his biography of Maxwell Perkins and a Pulitzer Prize for his biography of Charles Lindbergh (1998). He has also written a biography of Samuel Goldwyn and President Woodrow Wilson. Berg wrote the story for the 1982 film Making Love. Included is an unsigned, typed manuscript for inclusion in the book. Staple holes at top left corner. Bank processing stamps on verso. Corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition. A portion of the screen image has been obscured to protect sensitive information. The original check does not contain these concealing marks.
