BARNEY BIGARD
Inscribed signature on a 4x3 card
Autograph note signed: "To Kayo/Regards/Barney Bigard", 4¼x3 card. Although Leon Albany "Barney" Bigard (1906-1980) took clarinet lessons from Lorenzo Tio, Jr. and Papa Tio in New Orleans, he was first known as a tenor-saxophonist. After working with several jazz groups in the city, Bigard moved to Chicago, where he played with King Oliver from 1925-1927. Barney's greatest fame came between 1927-1942, when he played clarinet with Duke Ellington's band and was featured on many of Ellington's classic recordings, including "Mood Indigo", which he co-wrote. In 1947, he joined the Louis Armstrong All-Stars, touring the world with the group until 1955. Barney embarked on another world tour in 1961-1962, when he visited Europe and Africa for the U.S. State Department. He also lent his talents to Eddie Condon's band at the 1972 Newport Jazz Festival and later played in Johnny St. Cyr's Dixieland band, the Young Men from New Orleans, at Disneyland. Pencil notations (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
