BARNEY OLDFIELD
Racecar driver Barney Oldfield wrote a short note in pencil on the
back of this Firestone tire business card, asking the recipient to give the
bearer a case and inner tube. It's signed with his signature phrase "You know
me".
Autograph note signed "Barney Oldfield" in pencil. 1 page,
3¾x2¼ card. In full: "Carrigan: Please give bearer case and inner tube
I left there. You know me." Written on verso of Firestone Tire & Rubber
Co. business card. Oldfield (1878-1946, born Berna Eli Oldfield near
Wauseon, Ohio) was the chief driver of Henry Ford's racing car, the "999".
On June 15, 1903 at Indianapolis, the former bicycle racer had become the
first man to drive a car one mile in less than one minute. Over the next
15 years, Oldfield achieved fame as he broke other speed records and
performed bizarre, dangerous automobile stunts, but he was involved in
several fatal accidents to spectators and his mechanic. Ironically, Oldfield
became a prominent spokesman for safe driving during the 1930s and 1940s.
He was also later involved in tire manufacturing and auto safety engineering.
Lightly soiled touching signature. Lightly creased. Mounting remnants and paper
loss on verso (light show through at edges, does not touch signature or
handwriting). Otherwise in fine condition.
