BARNEY OLDFIELD
Racecar driver Barney Oldfield signed this typed letter on stationery from
the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado to say that he'd been "tapped" to MC
a Miss Handicapped America pageant.
Typed letter signed: "Barney", 1p, 8½x11, on stationery from the
Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dated "July 31". In full:
"Dear Army: Just been tagged for this one ... Sertoma's national Miss
Handicapped America(every entry in a wheelchair), in its 3rd year, has
tagged Col. Barney Oldfield of Litton Industries for MC. That's Denver, Aug. 6.
Ten states and finalists. BARNEY OLDFIELD". Barney Oldfield
(1878-1946) was the chief driver of Henry Ford's racing car, the "999".
On June 15, 1903 at Indianapolis, the former bicycle racer had become the
first man to drive a car one mile in less than one minute. Over the next
15 years, Oldfield achieved fame as he broke other speed records and
performed bizarre, dangerous automobile stunts, but he was involved in
several fatal accidents to spectators and his mechanic. Ironically, Oldfield
became a prominent spokesman for safe driving during the 1930s and 1940s.
Lightly toned and creased. Adhesive residue on verso with show-though (does not
touch signature). Three binder holes at right edge. Folded once horizontally and
twice vertically. Otherwise, fine condition.
