BARNEY WILLIAMS, the BUISLAY FAMILY, and OTHERS
Handwritten sentiments of the 19th century entertainers, on both sides of an album leaf
Autograph Sentiments signed: "Yours Truly/Barney Williams", "With the kindest regards/W. A. Moore/Chicago Nov. 8, 1866", "Yours Sincerely/Marie Kathleen Williams", and on verso "Buislay Family/Adolphe Buislay", "Auguste Buislay", "Jules Buislay", "E. Buislay", "Joaquin Buislay", "Jules J. Beneux", 5x7¾. Irish-born American actor BARNEY WILLIAMS, born Bernard O'Flaherty (1824-1876) was a popular comedian, best known as "Ragged Pat" in J. A. Amherst's Ireland as It Is, and for the title role in Samuel Lover's Rory O'More. He married actress and singer Maria Pray, who often performed on stage with him. Williams died a wealthy man, his funeral attended by prominent persons including John C. Fremont. MARIE KATHLEEN WILLIAMS was the daughter of Barney and Maria Williams. THE BUISLAY FAMILY, French gymnasts and trapeze artists, moved to the US, forming their own one-ring circus. The Buislay's were famed for acrobatic stunts like the "Spiral Mountain" and "Niagara Leap". Five members of the family have signed here: ADOLPHE, AUGUSTE, JULES, ETIENNE, and JOAQUIN BUISLAY. Of special interest is Auguste Buislay, who performed independently with partner David R. Hawley for P. T. Barnum and other circuses. Auguste Buislay may have been the first recorded parachutist, leaping from gas-filled balloons. Joaquin Buislay also starred in a burlesque extravaganza, The Sheep's Foot, in New York City's New Bowery Theatre (1866), no doubt displaying his acrobatic skills. Lightly frayed at left edge. Lightly toned. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
