autograph letter dated in 1984
Autograph letter signed: "Annie Cordy/[heart]", 1p, 8¼x11¾. Cannes, 1984 August 1. To
"Dear Mister Axelrod". Accompanied by original mailing envelope. In full: "Forgive me
about my late answer to your letter, but I was on tour with my musical comedy around
France, and I had no possibility of writing to you. Excuse also my English, it is not bad,
but it is poor!! - I start this letter very highly, because this piece of paper won't be
sufficient to put on all about my career!! I don't like very much talking about me! But
O.K. if it is what you want..I trie and be brief! - Born in Brussel.. Belgium.. you
know?..nice city! - 10 years old: Dancing school.. for fun!..classic, modern, arobatic..
cancan! Also singing with the ballet._. At 16.. 'amateurs'.. competitions.. was engaged in
a theater in Brussel, to play, comedy, dance..[illegible] then a show in a big cabaret (in
Brussel) as a leading lady._. (People find me funny... I like it.. May the 1st 1950: Paris..
engaged by the artistic director of the Lido for a year contract..as leading lady..with the
Bluebell girls... (choreographer Don Arden. (American) met my husband! (I still have the
same one, he must be a conservator! 1952 Prix Maurice Chevalier (he used to call me,
his little soldier because I go on the stage, as a soldier goes to war! - then musical
comedie.... Nine comedies.! about 30 shows... T.V. .. Pictures.. One woman shows..
1957 [arrow] N. York: Persian Room. Plazza hotel.. T.V shows.. Italy.. England -
Germany.. Russie 18 one woman shows, Leningrad, Moscow.. called me over there:
Pofov (clown) from Paris - or Maurice Chevalier in skirts - you see Mister Axelrod.. no
more paper..no more talking about me .. One thing I will say to you.. I love my public..
and sins (sic, since) I started in this business till now... I am happy.. because with my
little songs I give to many people, a little bit of happiness; and they give it back to me
so hardly - and hartly - thanks to them. God Bless you .. good luck". Born Léonie
Cooreman in Belgium, Annie Cordy (1928-2020) has appeared in numerous feature films and
made-for-TV movies, starred in several French TV series and made guest appearances on
several TV shows as well as touring in musical comedies and one-woman shows. Cordy
was made a Baroness by Belgium's King Albert II in 2004. Multiple folds. Light surface
creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
