BARRY GOLDWATER. TLS: "Barry Goldwater" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10. Washington, D.C., 1957 August 26. On United States Senate letterhead to The Amsterdam Enterprises, Inc., New York, New York. Begins: "Gentlemen". In full: "Under separate cover I am sending you today my Significant Sig metal (sic, medal) which I would ask that you enclose in plastic, as shown on the attached ad. I have marked with an X the style I wish used. Enclosed is my check for $7.88, since I am an AFA member." Ad and check not present. Goldwater was a member of Sigma Chi and the Association of Fraternity Advisors. Barry Goldwater (1909-1998), U.S. Senator from Arizona (1953-1965, 1969-1987), was the unsuccessful Republican presidential candidate in 1964, losing to President Johnson. Being accused of extremism in his conservative views, he asserted: "Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue." Lightly creased. Staple holes in upper left. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower margin, staple holes at upper left corner. Overall, fine condition.
