BARRY PAIN
The English author responds to an inquiry from The New York Times Literary Supplement about his work in progress, "a long novel entitled 'The Gifted Family'".
Typed Letter signed: "Barry Pain", 1 page, 7x8¾. Hogarth House, Bushey, Herts [England], 1908 August 5. On personal letterhead to Miss Catherine Welch, in full: "I had a letter from you in February with reference to the literary supplement of 'The New York Times'. I had no information to give you at that time, but I may say now that I am just finishing a long novel entitled 'The Gifted Family'. It is not what would be called a humorous book, though I hope it is not quite destitute of humour. Faithfully yours". English author Barry Pain (1864-1928) published light humorous short fiction and parodies in periodicals of wide readership, including Punch. His popularity benefited from the enthusiastic support of Robert Louis Stevenson. He also published several novels, many with fantasy elements. His An Exchange of Souls (1911), said to have inspired stories by H. P. Lovecraft, was republished in 2006. Many of his short stories, as well as a serialized version of his novel Eliza, have been adapted for BBC Radio. Multiple mailing folds. Bottom edge worn. Left edge soiled. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
