Typed Letter signed: “Bartimeus” 1p, 4½x7 affixed to 4¾x9½ slip of paper with caption
adhered to verso. Sydney, April 9, 1924. Written on H.M.S. Dunedin letterhead. To “Dear
Sir”. In full: “It gave me great pleasure to receive your letter and the pamphlets on Tasmania. It
was a matter of great regret to me that I was not able to see Hobart. I spent a fortnight touring in
Victoria and New South Wales instead, but perhaps if the Gods are good I shall see Tasmania
some day./ Believe me,/ Sincerely yours". Bartimeus (1886-1967) was the pen name of Lewis
Anselm da Costa Ricci. During World War I Ricci was a paymaster in the British Navy and
served on Admiral Jellicoe's battleship at the Battle of Jutland. Bartimeus drew on his
military experiences in his writing and his short stories portraying naval life were
immensely popular. One horizontal mailing fold. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
